Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Francisco da Costa Monteiro, warmly welcomed Mrs. Murtiani Hendriwardani, Policy Advisor from the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals, and Sustainable Development (IGF), for a courtesy meeting held in Farol. Accompanied by Mr. Rafael de Araújo, President of the National Minerals Authority (ANM), and his team, the meeting highlighted Timor-Leste's commitment as the 83rd member of the IGF.
Mrs. Hendriwardani expressed the IGF's enthusiasm for Timor-Leste’s integration into their network, highlighting the country’s initial steps in mineral development. IGF is excited to be part of Timor-Leste's journey, as the country is still in the early stages of developing its mineral sector. The organization looks forward to assisting Timor-Leste in establishing robust policies and preventive mechanisms that will support the nation's aspirations for sustainable mining development.
The visit also included a comprehensive two-day workshop facilitated by the IGF and ANM, focusing on critical aspects of mining policy and governance. Held on the 6th and 7th of May, the workshop delved into essential topics such as the foundations of critical minerals, including their demand, uses, and strategic implications for Timor-Leste. The workshop drew on international examples and best practices from Brazil, Chile, and India, providing a platform for stakeholders to align national strategies with global standards.
